WARDOGS beta: the alpha, the two closed betas, the open weekend, and what each test was for
The WARDOGS beta is over — the game launched into Early Access on 10 September 2026 — but 'wardogs beta', 'next playtest' and 'is wardogs playtest over' are still among the most-searched phrases about it, because BULKHEAD ran an unusually public test programme and a lot of guides were written during it. This page is the record: what each phase was, when it ran, what the studio said it was testing, and what changed between the last beta and launch.
Sources are BULKHEAD's Steam posts (dates in UTC), PCGamesN's launch reporting, and the Steam store's listing of the 'WARDOGS Playtest' app.
Dates are UTC from the Steam feed unless stated.
Pre-alpha and the sign-up pool (February – July 2026)
From the reveal on 9 February, BULKHEAD pointed players to a sign-up at community.wardogs.com 'to increase your chances of getting into early pre-alpha playtests', while warning in its February FAQ that 'we have a long road to Steam Early Access, so playtests aren't in the immediate future. Spots aren't guaranteed.' By 7 June the studio said it had 'been Pre-Alpha playtesting with a small selection of real players for a few months. The verdict so far? Players keep coming back. This month, we're adding even more players to that testing pool.' The 16 June and 16 July devlogs ('Addressing Feedback', 'Level Design & Performance') were written against that pool's reactions — 'Playtesters consistently tell us how surprised they are at how well it already performs.'
The first public look came on 23 July 2026, 18:00 UTC: a livestream with 'REAL WARDOGS playtesters, showing the raw, unfiltered gameplay experience' and, in the second half, 'some painful consequences for in-game mistakes'.
Closed alpha, the NDA, and pre-orders (August 2026)
The 11 August pre-order post looked back on a closed alpha — 'Closed Alpha was a HUGE success for us with an overwhelmingly positive response seen across social media' — and lifted its NDA: 'We are now officially lifting our NDA and creators can post your banked Closed Alpha footage from this past weekend.' (ETP playtests stayed under NDA.) It also explained why the next phase would be gated by pre-order: 'we have been capped on how many Steam Keys we can send externally, so we can no longer grant keys via the original signup process… Pre-ordering allows us to grant access directly to you without fully opening the floodgates like an open beta would. That allows us to far more accurately predict our launch day numbers and server requirements.'
The same post carried the refund line that defined BULKHEAD's tone: 'If you pre-order to get access to the Closed Beta and decide WARDOGS isn't for you, that's okay – we actively encourage refunding if the beta doesn't live up to your expectations.'

Closed Beta 01: 21–23 August 2026
The 20 August schedule post: 'The WARDOGS Closed Beta is this weekend. The NDA is lifted… WARDOGS pre-orders have blown past expectations. First wave of Closed Beta invites sent. You can now pre-load WARDOGS Playtest.' Access came two ways — guaranteed for pre-orders, and 'a small number of players into the Beta randomly via the native Steam Playtest signup process', with BULKHEAD saying it would not 'be that aggressive with adding players from the sign-up pool until later in the weekend… to help us analyse our server scaling and stability'.
The 24 August recap gave no numbers — 'The FPS community turnout was insane. Milestones hit. Memories made. Lessons learned.' — and teased 'our next major announcement on The FPS Games Show… 3 September 2026 @ 19:00 BST'.
Closed Beta 02: the scale test (3–5 September)
Announced 1 September: 'This is a genuine scale test where we want players to jump in and break our systems — right after The FPS Games Show.' Why not open: 'To validate the stability of our systems properly we will be increasing the number of Steam Playtest invitees in waves rather than opening the beta completely. This is to test areas of the game that only break at scale, such as server scaling and browsing, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements, VOIP and our login queue.'
That list is the checklist of what went wrong at launch anyway. The login queue is the one BULKHEAD had specifically flagged as a scale risk, and it is the one that failed on 10 September — PCGamesN's account has 168,000 people queued against 45,590 in game, and roughly ten of every hundred admissions per second going through. The beta did its job on the others: DLC entitlements (the Supporter Pack) and Twitch Drops are not in the launch-week problem list.
PCGamesN's 12 September piece adds a number the Steam posts do not: the beta's 245,000 concurrent players was the figure that made the studio 'feel great' going into launch — and it was roughly 60% of the 400,196 that actually arrived on 12 September. The scale test under-shot the scale by a wide margin, which is the most concrete lesson the beta produced.
Open beta: 5–6 September
On 5 September at 21:08 UTC: 'THE CLOSED BETA IS NOW AN OPEN BETA! Come break our servers. Until the Beta ends — Sunday at 08:00 UTC.' That gave roughly 35 hours of open access. PCGamesN's 10 September report says the most recent beta reached 'a peak concurrent player count of over 245,000', and its 12 September interview quotes UI/UX Director Howard Philpott: 'we got 245,000 concurrent players in the beta. So we were feeling great.' Then: 'As soon as we hit it, shit hit the fan.'
One design detail from that interview explains why launch queued and the beta did not: 'During beta, the firing range was opened six hours before the game proper, giving people time to filter in more gradually.' At launch everyone arrived at once.
Pre-load and the changelog: the night before
The beta ended on 6 September; pre-load opened at 22:46 UTC on 9 September with the Season 1 changelog attached. That is the moment the beta's numbers stopped applying. The post's own explanation — 'Previously our balancing was designed specifically for weekend long beta tests' — is the cleanest statement anywhere that beta progression was tuned for a 48-hour sprint and launch progression for a year. Level 10 went from 25,000 XP to 35,000; level 20 more than doubled; the Artillery Tank moved 35 Career levels.
For anyone who kept beta notes, the tells that a guide is beta-era are specific: a $2,500 FOB, a $1,600 Large Hammer, Artillery at Career 55, a Large Hammer at Support 7, a $25,000 armed Little Bird, 300 XP for an air-vehicle kill, or the church roof as a position. Any one of those dates the advice to before 9 September.
Beta to launch: what changed
The Season 1 changelog of 9 September rewrote the numbers the beta was played on. 'Previously our balancing was designed specifically for weekend long beta tests.' Level 15 went from 54,750 XP to 110,000; level 20 from 111,500 to 250,000. The FOB tripled to $7,500. The Artillery Tank went from Career 55 to Career 90 and $500,000. The Heavy Tank became a Driver 35 unlock. The Large Hammer moved to Support 8. Air-vehicle kills dropped to 250 XP; cheap supply sales to 1 XP. The Lakota got a balance pass and a pitch fix; the church roof exploit was closed.
So any beta guide's prices or levels are suspect by default. This site was written after the changelog and after patch 0.11, and every page names its read date.

What players took from the beta into launch
Steam's trending guides on 13 September were largely written by beta players for launch: 'HOW TO START WARDOGS ON DAY 1', 'The Complete Beginner Player Guide', 'Wardogs: Your First Hour | Money, Loadouts & FOBs', 'Foundational Tips for Beginning Builders', 'Winning 101'. The Reddit front page of r/WarDogs in launch week had a post titled 'as a 40yo dad that's been through many game launches' and another, 'Came here for the war, stayed for the logistics' — the second being the beta's most-repeated discovery, that the transport and supply roles are where the game's cash system shows.
The beta also produced the game's first false-ban story: PCGamesN reports that the zero-tolerance anti-cheat 'very, very quickly turned into banning our legitimate alpha testers' at launch, including streamers who had played the tests. That is a launch problem, but it was the alpha and beta population it hit first.
Is there a next beta?
No. The game is in Early Access, which BULKHEAD expects to last 'around 1 to 2 years', and the Steam listing still carries a 'WARDOGS Playtest' app dated 3 July 2026 — that is the beta client, not an upcoming test. Future tests, if any, would be announced on the same Steam feed this site reads; the patch-notes hub lists every post so far.

- BULKHEAD's 11 August post said 'ETP Playtests will still be under NDA' while lifting the general NDA; it did not expand the acronym, and no later post refers to it.
- Was the beta the full game?
- It was a weekend-tuned build: the Season 1 changelog says beta balancing 'was designed specifically for weekend long beta tests' and rewrote the XP curve, prices and unlocks for launch.
