WARDOGS player count: live players now from the Steam API, the 400,196 peak, and the launch-week numbers
Players in game now
76,455
Steam Web API, app 1867240, read 14 Sep 2026 09:12:47 GMT. Refreshes at most every 10 minutes. All-time peak: 400,196 on 12 Sep 2026 (SteamDB).
Steam reviews: 50,876 total, 40,916 positive (80.4%), “Very Positive” — read hourly.
The WARDOGS player count above is read directly from Valve's Steam Web API (ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers for app 1867240) and re-fetched at most every ten minutes. It is the same source SteamDB and Steam Charts use — the number of Steam accounts running the game at that moment — so it will match theirs to within the refresh window. It is not the number of people in matches, in queues or on community servers specifically; Steam does not break those out.
Below it are the numbers that will not change: the launch-week records as published by BULKHEAD, SteamDB and PCGamesN, and what each one measures. Nothing here is estimated.
The records, and who published them
Peak concurrent players: 400,196 on 12 September 2026, per SteamDB's post to the Steam news feed ('WARDOGS has peaked at 400,196 concurrent players on 12 September 2026 within the release week'). BULKHEAD thanked players for '400,000 Peak Concurrent Users' in the patch 0.11 post the same day. Beta peak: 'over 245,000', per PCGamesN's 10 September report and UI/UX Director Howard Philpott's 'we got 245,000 concurrent players in the beta' in the 12 September interview. Copies sold: '1.25 MILLION' per BULKHEAD at 01:05 UTC on 11 September; '1,500,000 copies and climbing' per PCGamesN on 12 September. Our own read on 13 September at about 17:00 UTC: 381,899 in game.
Reviews: 45,958 total, 36,572 positive (79.6%), 'Mostly Positive', on 13 September; PCGamesN had quoted '83% from 24,000 user ratings' a day earlier.

What 'player count' measures on Steam
Valve's number is accounts currently running the game client. It includes people sitting in the login queue (which is why launch-day counts were high even when only 45,590 were in matches, per PCGamesN), people in the tutorial, and people idling in the menu. It excludes nobody who has the game open and includes nobody who does not. It is sampled, not continuous, so short spikes can be missed. SteamDB records the all-time peak from the same feed; the 400,196 figure is that record as of 12 September.
The number is global. BULKHEAD's 0.11 post about 'increased server capacity in the Asian region' and the fourteen-zone maintenance table show why the daily curve has more than one hump — Asian and American evenings do not overlap.
Launch night in numbers, from the developer thread
The only official minute-by-minute record of the count is the locked 'Dev Updates' thread on the Steam forum, posted by G_Medlin (tagged developer, Team17) on 10 September. In UTC: 5 pm, 'currently rate limited and working with Valve directly to resolve this'; 6 pm, players filtering into matches; 7 pm, a server restart; 8 pm, a required client update and everyone re-queued in waves; 8:30 pm, Hotfix #1; 11 pm, '135k players through queue and in-game'; 12 am, 'Queue issues should have passed now!' PCGamesN's studio visit adds the stats-screen moment from inside BULKHEAD: 45,590 in game against 168,000 in the queue, with roughly ten of every hundred admissions per second succeeding before the fix. Insider Gaming puts the unlock at 4 pm UTC, so the rate limit hit within the first hour.
That is why the day-one Steam count and the day-one 'in match' count are different numbers: Steam counted everyone with the client open, including the queue.
How the launch curve was built
Seven months of wishlist growth — 100,000 in three days from 9 February, 200,000 by 18 February, 500,000 by 26 May, one million by 14 August — turned into pre-orders from 11 August, a 245,000-player beta on 5–6 September, and 1.25 million sales in the first 15 hours of Early Access. The peak on 12 September, two days after launch, is consistent with the queue clearing on the night of the 10th and the weekend arriving.
The first week also had a maintenance hole: about an hour from 08:00 UTC on 14 September for patch 0.11, during which the count would have fallen toward zero. A launch-week Reddit thread titled 'Is Wardogs already dead? Down 99% of players from peak' is the kind of thing that appears when someone reads the API during a maintenance window.

Steam's count, SteamDB, and the tracker sites
Every WARDOGS player-count page on the web reads the same Valve endpoint this one does; the differences are refresh rate and what gets added around it. SteamDB samples continuously and keeps the all-time peak (400,196 on 12 September); tracker sites republish the same feed with their own charts; some add 'average daily' or 'weekend' figures that Valve does not publish and that no method is given for — one such page claimed a 45,000 daily average for a game that had been out four days. This page shows the raw number, its read time, the SteamDB peak with its date, and nothing derived.
Reviews are the other live number. Steam's summary endpoint gave 45,958 reviews at 79.6% positive on 13 September; PCGamesN had quoted 83% of 24,000 a day earlier; the live block above re-reads it hourly. A falling percentage during a queue-and-ban launch week is the expected shape, not a verdict.
Why the count dips, and when it is not a signal
Maintenance (announced in advance on the Steam feed). Login-queue faults (the launch-day hotfix forced every client to close, which drops the count to zero for the restart). Time of day — BULKHEAD's regions span PDT to NZST. Steam-side sampling gaps. None of those is a trend. What is a trend is the week-over-week peak, which is why we quote the record and the read date rather than a rolling average nobody publishes.
Regions and the daily shape
WARDOGS' population is global by design — fourteen languages on the listing, and patch 0.11's note that BULKHEAD 'increased the server capacity in the Asian region to support the interest coming from that region', with the maintenance table listing Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Eastern Australia and New Zealand alongside the Americas and Europe. So the count has more than one daily peak: an Asian evening, a European evening and an American evening arrive hours apart, and a read taken at 08:00 UTC on a Monday — the 0.11 maintenance hour — will be the week's lowest. Compare like with like: the same hour, a week apart.
For the same reason, 'players per team right now' cannot be derived from the count. Steam gives one global number; how it splits into 100-player matches across regions and community servers is not published.
Where the other numbers come from
Copies sold are BULKHEAD's own posts and a named press interview; Steam does not publish sales. Review counts are Steam's review summary endpoint, which we read with the same date stamp. Wishlists are BULKHEAD's milestone posts. The beta peak is a developer quote in PCGamesN. We do not use SteamSpy estimates, third-party 'owners' ranges, or any figure whose method is not stated. The sources list has the URL for each.

The live figure updates itself; the records do not change until BULKHEAD, SteamDB or Steam publish new ones, and the charts carry their read dates. If the live number is far below the 400,196 peak, that is the normal shape of a launch curve in every large multiplayer game, and the interesting comparison is the daily peak against the previous week's — which SteamDB charts and this page does not attempt to replicate.
Questions people ask
- How many people are playing WARDOGS right now?
- The live figure at the top of this page comes from the Steam Web API and refreshes every ten minutes.
- What is the WARDOGS peak player count?
- 400,196 concurrent on 12 September 2026, per SteamDB; BULKHEAD cited '400,000 Peak Concurrent Users' the same day.
- How many copies has WARDOGS sold?
- 1.25 million by BULKHEAD's post at 01:05 UTC on 11 September 2026; 1.5 million per PCGamesN on 12 September.
- How many players did the WARDOGS beta have?
- Over 245,000 concurrent, per PCGamesN and BULKHEAD's Howard Philpott.
- Does the player count include people in the queue?
- Yes — Steam counts accounts running the client, including those queued or in menus.
- Is WARDOGS dying?
- The count falls from a launch peak in every large multiplayer game; the honest measure is week-over-week peaks, not a single read, and a maintenance window drops the count to near zero for an hour.
- Where does the live number come from?
- Valve's ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers endpoint for app 1867240, the same feed SteamDB uses.
- How many people were in the queue at launch?
- PCGamesN reports a studio stats screen showing 168,000 queued against 45,590 in game; the developer thread reports 135,000 through the queue by 11 pm UTC.
- Why do tracker sites show different numbers?
- Same Valve feed, different refresh times; any 'daily average' they add is their own derivation, not a Valve figure.
